Let me get this straight.

David spent nearly the first 40 years of his life living in fear that his
father would find about his homosexuality. Only to have his father die in a
car accident before David could come out, and thus was damned to live the
rest of his life in fear that his father hated him. Not 2 years after his
father's death, he was forced to deal with his middle-aged brother having a
stroke.

Less then a year later his sister in law disappears and winds up dead.

A few months after his sister in laws tragic death, he is kidnapped and
tortured by sociopath hitchhiker.

If that was not enough for a 2-year span, his brother has another stroke and
dies.

Finally, the one man David ever loved is murdered.

Did I miss anything?

Yes.

He was only about 30 when his father died.

His ex-fiancee continued to protest he was the love of her life.

No matter what was happening in his life he always was there for his
mother, sister and brother when they were acting a bit crazy (which was
often).

But he did find another lover after Keith was shot.
