In most of Everybody's Waiting, Nate was very hostile and negative to Brenda
and Willa, but suddenly changes (at least in Brenda's mind/dream)... I'm
not sure why. There didn't seem to be any precipatating event or
explanation.

Likewise, Ruth is extremely depressed early on but then near the end
suddenly isn't any longer.

It's all in her mind -- projections of her own feelings, doubts, and
resolutions.

exactly the Nate images are Brenda's doubts once she faces that she is
able to accept positive images. Thus the Nate SR JR scene

I saw it as that the hostile Nate visions were Brenda's insecurities
and the final Nate and Nathaniel visit in her dream was an actual
visitation. That the "real" Nate came to her in the dream and
reassured her that he did love the baby, despite his fears and
introduced Willa to his father as evidence of his true feelings. I
thought that Brenda, upon waking, realized that this was true, that
Nate did love the baby, and stopped beating herself up, hence no more
negative Nate images.

I noticed that after Ruth stopped being hostile towards Brenda and
accepted her, helped her, wanted her as part of the family, and
accepted Willa that the next time we see Nate he is supportive of
Willa.

Yes and finally feeling that Willa has turned the corner and will
survive and be "normal".

Not really. Nate was a manifestation of Brenda's insecurities. The
vision/dream of The Two Nates was after Ruth assured her that worrying
about Willa doesn't mean there is a problem and that she does have the
love and support of herself and many people - which Brenda must have
feared she wouldn't have after Nate's death. So of course he was more
loving - the Fisher family had finally accepted her and she felt less
scared about Willa as a result.

All of which is carried off so naturally by Brenda who has the most amazing
facial expressions .She used her natural pregenancy in an
incredible display of body language. An award for Rachel!
