Discussion:
why drive a car to NYC if you are moving there?

I loved the scene... but what young person would go to New York City
knowing they were going to live there and take a car with them?

OK, she got her trust fund, but between the parking, traffic, etc...

Just a small detail, but it did occur to me.

Maybe she'll sell it. I'm not even sure if Clare was even going to NY,
at least not directly. We know that she wasn't committed there (maybe
she'll veer off to Chicago to try out that company that acquired the
one that "hired" her. Rather than take a fast dirct route to a place
that might not pan out for her, Clare decided to take a slower trip,
one that offered her possibilities. I think the idea of the car was
linked to a theme of 6FU - the myth of human permanence. Nothing lasts
forever, and even something in front of you is already gone. Clare
thought she had a great job lined up that would set her on her way, but
that fell through. Rather than a flight - with a set destination and
ETA - the car offers her any number of choices of life-direction.
Claire probably did make it to NYC - but probably far later than
earlier expected.

Cars always (but not only) represent freedom (remember how you felt when
you got your drivers license?), so Claire had cast off the anchor of
that old hearse and was truly free driving off in her new Toyota.

A road trip represents freedom and unlimited possibilities.
I remember the exhiliration leaving my cramped family
life when I was young. And I still get that feeling when
I start a road trip vacation (pehaps a dying practices
if energy price increases dont stop).

Road trips are frequent movie themes, especially
for young people tasting life.

Thelma and Louise is another road trip movie.

I packed my car, left Michigan and moved to NYC and kept the car for 5
years (that was 12 years ago). It happens.

I know a lot people who live in NY and have cars. Most don't live in
Manhattan, but some do. My sister-in-law has a car and parks it on the
street on the Upper West Side (granted, it sometimes takes her an
hour-and-a-half to find a parking space...)

Claire grew up in LA, and the idea of living without a car probably
seems inconceivable. Maybe she'll get rid of it when she gets to NYC
and maybe she won't. We'll never know. But it's not as if having her
driving away was some kind of absurd mistake or something.

For all we know she may have rented the car -- great chance to see the
country en route, compared with flying or even the train or bus.

I thought the same thing.
Not that I would at age 54, but at Clair's age and just having the trust
fund unfrozen, the world is a different reality.

I grew up in NYC and almost everyone I knew had a car. That's WHY
traffic is so bad and parking is so difficult there!

I don't think the scene would have played out as well ( if at all) had they
put her in a plane. The wide open emptiness of the desert, Claire driving
herself & no one else in the car, the wind blowing everything past her as
she rushes toward an unknown future , the in-the-future scenes, the song,
even her death-bed prefaced with photos of the past filling her walls all
tied everything beautifully. Without
question the very best ending I have ever experienced.
