I thought it was hideous. Gay people are supposed to have better taste.
They showed no respect for the style and era of the home.
I even think Ruth's rattan furniture looked 1000% better in the
sunporch.

I always loved Ruth's green kitchen and the porch,too.

What I want to know is how did Maya's stuffed Monkey get crammed down in
there between the refrigerator and the lower Kitchen cabinet? Now I don't
know about your kids, or my kids (especially since I don't have any).. but
it doesn't seem reasonable that a four year old child would purposely cram
her favorite stuffed animal in a place like that on purpose, and then not
run crying to someone "I crammed my stuffed Monkey down in there and I can't
get him out!!".. I have a sneaking suspicion that Brenda's Mother did it
out of sheer meanness, given the way she tossed the Monkey onto the floor
after showing Ruth the other stuffed animal she gave to Maya. Dammit, this
is imortant and I want an answer! :) ..

English Lit 301, controversy is required for good drama. Thanks to you,
we an answer to the question, what made SFU so damn good! It was

It may have been set on top of the fridge by an adult, and subsequently
fallen into the opening.

From the way it looked like Ruth had so much trouble tugging and pulling the
stuffed Monkey out of that tight space, (watch the scene again if you taped
it or have HBO on demand..) .. it didn't look to me like it even could have
just fallen down there, but rather that someone intentionally crammed it in
there.

Well, who the Hell knows. This episode seems to have generated a lot more
questions than answers. Alan Ball knows. Let's find him and get him drunk
and get some answers :) ..

lived in, the floors probably aren't completely level and the opening
between the fridge and wall is probably slightly wider at the top than
at the bottom. The toy could've falled into the gap at the top and
slowly fallen further/gotten wedged in tighter every time someone
opened/closed the fridge door. Besides, if you look at the scene
again, it's more Ruth's hysteria that makes it difficult for her to get
the toy out than the toy truly being difficult to extract.

I agree. I live in a new house, and my fridge has a wider space at
the top. When vacuuming, the hose will go in there from the top to
about halfway down, then needs the skinny attachment.
Also, kids do weird stuff. (Even if you don't have kids, don't you
remember?) Maya could have been playing a "story" where the monkey
hid in her cave, getting way from a monster, or whatever, and then
been distracted. When Margaret came to whisk her away from Ruth,
especially with Ruth emminating all those tragic vibes, the monkey
might be the last thing on Maya's mind.

I somehow don't remember it that way, Gayle. I recall seeing the monkey on
the kitchen table when Ruth was sitting there with Maya and Margaret came
strolling in to pick up Maya. This was long after Brenda gave birth. I
think it's possible that Margaret might have stuffed it into the small crack
next to the refrigerator while Ruth was packing Maya's clothes. That monkey
was wedged in so tightly and it took so much effort for Ruth to retrieve it,
there is no way it could have simply fallen there. There just wasn't enough
room as the space was only about an inch wide. We later witnessed
Margaret's disdain for the toy as she tossed it onto the floor at Brenda's.

Only Alan Ball knows for sure!

I thought it looked absolutely fabulous and really did justice to the
house as a whole. What I didn't really get was how much time was
supposed to have elapsed between Keith and David deciding to buy the
house, and us seeing the renovations. Claire hadn't left for her job
yet, so it could have been all that long, could it? I've had
contractors take months just to replace a light switch cover, let alone
make all the changes these guys made. Anyone get a sense for how long
this was supposed to have taken?

Pretty good breakdown, except the idea that those renovations could
have been done in a few months. I've known many people who have
renovated kitchens & baths in their apts and I've never seen it take
less than 6 month. I'm sure there was some literary liscense on that.

I'm also sure Rico didn't recommend HIS contractor, who seemed to get
distracted on the job, eh?

the base layout of the counter and appliances didn't seem changed.

The appliances were replaced and the yellow behind-counter tiles were
replaced (or more likely covered) with a reddish surface.

The cabinets seemed to have been only repainted.

The dining room had nbew window treatments and some other changes, but
nothing that looked particularly radical.

As David is giving George the tour, he mentions that the Jalousie
windows were all replaced with double-hung windows. The lead time on
windows is ridiculous.

I also thought it was attractive. It wasn't Ruth's and Nathaniel's home any
longer, it was David's and Keith's, so, naturally, it reflected their
tastes, not Ruth's and Nathaniel's. Do most people try and replicate the
decor of their parents' home? Nice as my family's home was, I certainly
didn't.
