It seems ever since the final ep of MASH, that the series finale seems to be
really important. Makes sense. We get to know the characters. For lack of a
better term, they become part of the family. And expectations for the series
finale are huge. And they seem to often times really fall short. I can't
comprehend how hard it would be to write the final, wrap it all up show. The
problem, as I see it, is that life goes on. The cameras turn off, but the
universe lives on. What happened to Hawkeye after he went home?
I wondered all day how the final ep of SFU would play out, considering how
in flux the characters all seemed to be. How could it be wrapped up in a
tidy package? And, in my eyes, the first hour was typical series finale
fare. Transitions. Moving on. Problems being solved. And I admittedly teared
up at the goodbye scene. Claire's anguish was played to the painful hilt. I
assumed that was it. She dries off into the sunset. Goodbye SFU.
But it kept going. And it suddenly all came together. We got to see their
lives. All in a quick cut 5 minutes. That basically showed the essence of
the show. Everyone dies. No one gets out alive.
In my opinion the finest, most fitting series finale ever.
