I think I can say without much hesitation that CBS is going for the
Lost crowd here. What I like about this pilot is that it seems to be
going for that small-town paranoia thing, the way that 50s sci-fi
movies used to do and Rod Serling was so good at on The Twilight Zone.
If it sticks with that, and we really don't know what the hell is going
on for several episodes and the mystery and tension in the small town
starts to get bigger and bigger, then that could be something
interesting.

Neve Campbell's boyfriend from Scream is boring though. Dude has got
zero personality.

The problem is, if you know anything at all about nuclear attack
scenarios, then you already know exactly what is going on. In fact, you
could probably predict the next few episodes almost exactly.

That's the difference with "Lost." Abrams/Lindelof were able to invent
an entirely new island with an "amazing history" (as Abrams himself
said). The island has its own rules; it's invisible from detection,
there's a monster made of mind-reading black smoke and a shadowy
research project and hallucinations and precognitive dreams and power
animals that appear randomly. So we viewers have no idea what will
happen next and that's what keeps us tuning in. Lost Island is a
magical island; nothing is predictable.

With the nuclear attack scenario in "Jericho," we have an excellent idea
what will happen next. Even if the radioactive fallout causes the
appearance of mutated giant ants, that's been done before too. :-)
