OK, I got into the show just a little late, and should rent the first
season for the few I did miss...but....exactly what was the secrect
room of Nathaniel's? That's one fact I've not gotten clearly....

Nathaniel Sr. had a room over a Mexican (?) restaurant in a crappy part of
town where he'd hang out with some seriously strange people, get stoned, and
listen to records. His secret hideaway. In a very early episode, Nate Jr.
finds himself up there with Nate Sr.'s ghost, they get stoned and someone
drops the needle on Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes' "Journey To The Center
Of The Mind."

I took this to mean that Nate Sr. simply couldn't handle being home with
straight-laced Ruth and bodies and funerals all the time, and this was his
way of relaxing and getting her and his home and work life out of his mind
for a while. It's been years since I saw that episode, I think Nate and
David found out about the room, or just Nate, went up there, and met Nate
Sr.'s ghost and hung out with him and his friends for a while, then suddenly
found himself sitting there alone.

The music is valid, but what he did there was just Nate's fantasies
(amusing as they were). We don't actually know what Nathaniel did in the
room, or even how often/recently he went there (although the owner of
the restaurant may have commented on how often).

His way of saying "I need my space!" without having to confront Ruth. ;)

IIRC it was that same episode in which Nate discovered that pops cut a
lot of deals like this, i.e., not charge for a funeral, but bartered for
whatever the customer had to offer, e.g., the room, pot, etc.

They found it after Late Nate Sr's death when they were going over the
books, because he got use of the room in trade for funeral work he did
for the family who owned it.
