Yikes, I've enjoyed most of the episodes until I got to "That's My Dog".

David picks up a whacko hitchhiker who terrorizes him- it goes on and on.
What was the point?

Was it that a "real man" like John Wayne would have fought back- that a
"fag" like David was too much a sissy?

Yes, that's EXACTLY what Alan Ball was trying to say! Aren't you
CLEVER to have figured it out! Bravo! Well done! Well spotted! Now
please don't ever watch or talk about the show again. Thanks.

Seriously though, somebody enlighten me about that episode. There must be
some "higher theme" to deep for me- I'm sure you folks, being far more
sophisticated, have figured it out.

That episode was about what happens when your worst nightmare
ever comes true and you're unable to rescue yourself. Its was about
tragedy striking when you least expect it and how a reasonably secure
person, when thrown into an altered and violent reality, can find
himself completely unprepared. Its was about the horrid awful things
human beings will do to each other and never feel remorse. It was the
set up of a continuing story about the pain humans are capable of
carrying over a long period of time, hiding it from others so that it
will be with us perpetually, even as it slowly destroys our sanity, our
happiness, and our family.

It was an episode that affected me profoundly and has made me more wary
of this increasingly unpredictable world.

I dunno, Joe. The high-drama reactions to your question from others in this
group suggest they think 1) You're a troll or 2) Asking a no-brainer not
worthy of consideration.

I don't know anything regarding the first, but as for it being a stupid
question..stupid is in the eye of the beholder. <g>

Anyway, I surely don't believe the episode was an exercise in showing what a
stereotypical *gay* would do in such a situation. I think it's just showing
a slice of life and how an individual reacted. I hated it, I'll never watch
it again (I'm currently renting all the episodes, I missed a few). I
personally don't see any *deep* meaning myself. My ex, not a gay man, would
pick up hitchhikers to be helpful (he was raised in Scotland, perhaps a
little naive, but a rough, tough little guy)...so those suggesting only
*gays* pick up hitchikers are generalizing. I mean, David did have a gay
fantasy about this guy, but it's also likely if David didn't pick him up, he
could of carjacked him.

I'm just hoping that the bastard gets his due- I can envision another
episode where something terrible happens to him- like some chick is blowing
him and bites off his dick, then he dies from loss of blood. Then, he ends
up at their funeral home. But, I guess this won't happen as the series is
finished, right? Too bad.

Well, without spoiling it, Jake the hitchhiker does make a return
appearance before the series wraps. If you're hoping it will provide
you with the John Wayne/Dirty Harry/Hollywood conclusion you'd like, I
think you'll find the episode is, like life, less satisfying than a
Hollywood ending.

He drives off into the sunset w/Brenda's mother...and we're left with
the idea that poetic and amusing justice is imminent, just not sure as
to which of the two...

And which one survives - my money's on Margaret: older (the wisdom of
experience counts for a lot here), a trained shrink (so she'll tap dance
on Jake's miserable attempts at psychological terror) and more ruthless
<no pun intended>.

Just what sort of experience are we talking about? I anticiapte a
tragic violent end, but for Jake. It makes dramatic sense because Jake
phantasms begin to haunt Maragaret much as they did to David - but Jake
would not have been as morally or intellectually able to conjure up
ghosts of Margaret.

Oh, Brenda's mother sure knows how to pick them- I just saw the episode
where she's hanging with that art teacher.

He's also boinked her son, and her daughter's sis-in-law's (male) ex.

That's an absurd comparison, like asking why he didn't behave like
George Clooney would have in "Batman." Apples & oranges.

Kieth's as gay as David, but he would have handled things differently

By the way, I read in some newspaper article that one of the Keith/David
partnership, in real life is not gay and the other is- but I wasn't sure who
is who as I don't know their real names.
