What exactly was the point of that stuffed animal Ma C gave Maya? It
was some sort of giraffe like animal that she said, "doesn't bond with
it's children so they will latch onto any lactating female." I couldn't
figure out if she was aware of the Freudian symbolism? Was she making
some snarky dig at poor orphan Maya, like, "Dear, this animal is just
like you, willing to desperately grasp at whatever will provide it with
comfort... I knew you could relate."
Or was she expressing some repressed hostility toward Brenda's nascent
bond with Ruth? Did Ma C, having failed miserably as a mother, know
that, clueless and chilly as she is, Ruth, with her 50s wardrobe and
equally outdated axioms--"Let's Make Cookies!" and "Put on a
sweater!"--was about 1000 times better prepared to mother Brenda in
this time than she?
Thoughts?
