What exactly was the point of that stuffed animal Ma C gave Maya? It
was some sort of giraffe like animal that she said, "doesn't bond with
it's children so they will latch onto any lactating female." I couldn't
figure out if she was aware of the Freudian symbolism? Was she making
some snarky dig at poor orphan Maya, like, "Dear, this animal is just
like you, willing to desperately grasp at whatever will provide it with
comfort... I knew you could relate."

Or was she expressing some repressed hostility toward Brenda's nascent
bond with Ruth? Did Ma C, having failed miserably as a mother, know
that, clueless and chilly as she is, Ruth, with her 50s wardrobe and
equally outdated axioms--"Let's Make Cookies!" and "Put on a
sweater!"--was about 1000 times better prepared to mother Brenda in
this time than she?

Thoughts?

Lucky your nym indicates you are a female, else that statement could
have easily been misconstrued.:-)

I think she was talking about Maya. That Maya would latch on to
Brenda(lactating female) and therefore Ruth had no place in Maya's
life(throwing the monkey off the chair.) I think that this little
thread is ended with Brenda and Ruth on the stairs when Ruth talks
about mothering being a lonely job. Ma C is clueless, I think again
expressing her self in the only way she knows how treating life and
Maya as possesions to be horded. And I think she was definately aware
of what she was saying to Ruth.

Maybe there was something in what she was saying about the okapi and
it's bonding, but I think the main message was that she wanted HER
purchased animal to supplant Ruth's homey, soft monkey. The opaki was
exotic, hoity-toity, new, hard to the touch.... like Ma C, and the
monkey was squishy and loveable, common, unpretentious, etc. like
Ruth. Ma C pushed the monkey off to get it out of Maya's sight (and
to show the audience the final atttempt to push out Ruth).

Good analysis. Just the way I was seeing it but you put into words better
than I would have.

Olivier was apparently fond of Ma Chenowith's plush toy. Not sure how he
felt about Ruth's homey, soft monkey.

Olivier is an artist with a shrewd sense of that line between artistry
and just being artsy. I think he would have appreciated the
distinction between the monkey (with it's soft understatement) and the
complicated if emotionally cold Okapi.

Olivier wasn't very picky at all.

Interesting. Ma C. in her pretentious stupidity could not eliminate an
unwanted presence (Ruth) by shoving the evidence of her influence out of
sight. Can we relate to the symbolism?

Ma Chenowith was a Cunt. Ball should have shown her death by having someone
push her in front of an oncoming train or bus.
