Truly the Best Finale to a Series Ever

From reading the spoilers on the group I knew how it was going to end.
However, I was still blown away by it. It was an amazing ending to a
groundbreaking show. I'm really going to miss Six Feet under. Claire's
death kind of reminded me of the movie Titanic where Rose dies in her bed
surrounded by her pictures. Anyway, I'm sad to see the show end. I don't
think we are going to see another show of this caliber for quite some time.

A perfect ending to an amazing show!
Thanks for the memories.

Yes, it was terrific! Really well done. Never seen a show ending that
tied things up so satisfactorily.

Is my math right that Claire got married in her 40s? And didn't seen
to have any children? And I thought it was great that George and Ruth
stayed together (quite something given George's track record up until
then), and also kind of cool to see Billy and Brenda together until the
very end. All in all, mighty wonderful.

George's reaction is the one that got me. I've always liked him (the
actor), he did a stellar job.

I've lost a parent, but never lost anyone I was in love with. I got a
peek...but I know it's something you won't know until it happens to you.

My guess her husband. It shows she found real love.

Who else thinks Maggie was pregnant with Nate's child?

I had really come to dislike all the Fischer's (except David) as the
most self-centered people I had ever watched, but the last show
redeemed them to me.

Yes, I think that was Brenda's husband, showing she was able to move
on, and yes, I had that same thought about Maggie. That Nate certainly
was fertile, wasn't he?

David older had some grace, but the scene with Ruth and Brenda was even
sweeter than the one letting Claire go away.

Hadn't thought of this, but it's possible.

OTOH, did the show really need *another* female to be knocked up by Nate
when he's in a relationship with (for the second time) Brenda?

This is the worst soap-opera/melodrama clichee in the book and it has to
be done _awfully_ well to work in any kind of drama these days.

After her conversation with Nate about how horrible it was to lose her
son, I don't believe that she, finding herself pregnant with the child
of a man she seemed to have loved, would then abort that child.

Presumably her second husband? A woman like that (foxy, loads of
money, even w/ 2 kids as baggage) would easily find a new man to marry.

Yup, just wondered if he's anyone we'd seen before, or if they
introduced an entirely new character. At first I thought maybe he was
the guy from the apartment complex, before Nate came back into the

the only thing I thought was off, was that Claire reunites with the
lawyer guy after some 20 odd years at her mother's funeral? I was
hoping he would pop a little earlier. maybe a few month to a year or
two after she left for NY.

As for everything else, it was perfect.

While I'm sure there will be no spinoff, the ending did make Claire the

What do you mean, the life she's lead? That she's had five years of
boozing and drugging? The show never indicated that she was having
unprotected sex, so she wasn't in danger of being infected with
HIV-AIDS. I didn't watch every single episode every single season, but
afaik she didn't share needles or even inject her drugs, so she wasn't
in much danger of Hep C. She drank but she wasn't written as an addict.
So, imho, we didn't see anything during these past 5 years that would
preclude a long life.

She was in sexual relationships with two men who engaged in homosexual
sex, one of whom got her pregnant. That is not having safe sex by any
stretch of the imagination.

You're right she did get pregnant. I forgot about that. But both of
these men continued to be in good health (physically, abeit not
mentally, emotionally, or spiritually) throughout the subsequent
seasons, both had sex with other _female_ characters, neither of whom
suffered consequences beyond mental/emotional instability -- not an
official STD yet. I may be imagining it, but I thought that in the
episode where Claire discovers Russell's dalliance with Olivier she
addresses the issue. I still feel that there was nothing in what we were
shown that would suggest that Claire was in danger of having contracted
HIV-AIDS, and there was nothing in the show that would argue that she'd
have a shorter rather than longer life.

My friend Jerry is 70. He's smoked pot pretty much every day of his
life for the past 50+ years, and they'd have to invent a whole new word
for "promiscuous" to describe the way he has sex. In fact, he moved
Bangkok awhile back just so he could indulge both passions more freely.
He's enjoyed a very productive and happy life. He has two grown
children who each have children of their own. He's written something
like 30 books, several of them major bestsellers, and continues to
write prolifically, with his latest book coming out in the US next
month, with more following. He travels constantly and loves nothing
more than encountering new experiences, meeting new people, learning
new things. So don't knock pot and promiscuous sex. They may not be
the key to a long and happy life, but they don't necessarily prevent
it, either.
